Biography

Following graduation with a BA (Hons) degree in Visual Communication from Brighton Polytechnic in 1977, I worked as a magazine designer and illustrator in London. (Cosmopolitan, Living, WeightWatchers, House & Garden, Homes & Gardens and many more). The subject matter for the illustrations were mainly for cookery, food, plants and garden features. Four years were spent producing weekly illustrations for FABBRI’s  Garden Magic and Plant Magic, which were syndicated around the world.
In 2006 I decided to concentrate solely on my own paintings, exhibiting in galleries in South-east England and participating in South East Open Studio events, based in Kent and Sussex.
My husband and I moved to Hong Kong in 2007. Here I was enthralled by the vibrancy and colours of day-to-day life in this exciting city. The exotic flowers and foliage I saw during my extensive travels throughout South East Asia, become a focal point in my botanical paintings. During my six years in Hong Kong I had several solo exhibitions of my work.

Since returning home to Tunbridge Wells in 2012 I have participated in the SEOS Open Studios events, and have exhibited my work in a number of venues, including Open Exhibitions of SBA (Society of Botanical Artists) and The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. I was awarded full status as a member of the Society of Botanic Artists in 2016, and am now on the SBA council. I exhibit my work with the SBA, both in London and internationally.

I regularly take on commissions, from portraits to botanical subjects and am happy to produce one-off giglée prints from my originals.

Personal statement

My work is inspired by light, whether it be the bold colours of exotic plants and flowers or the bright lights of the city. I aim to inspire, rather than merely inform, and will use whatever medium or paper I feel will convey that feeling. Most of my work is in watercolour and ink, though I also use oils and acrylics (mainly my landscape paintings).
